Expect Challenges too...
This is an excerpt from Vol. 3 No. 2 Spring '98 special issue of Kempo newsletter, entitled "I Don't Want To..."

You may notice that after a few months of Kempo participation your child resists coming and begins to complain that "all we do is go over the same things at every class." This attitude is usually a normal reaction to learning a discipline like Kempo. It indicates that your child may not want to break away from playtime or TV to come to Kempo class. Self-discipline does not come easy. We'll bet he really likes class but has trouble getting motivated. You might test this idea by asking your child how Kempo class went today. If he regularly resists going, but reports consistently that "class went well", chances are he is a normal healthy child who has not yet disciplined himself. Your resolve as a parent is being tested. If you are committed to his growth in this area, he will realize that you are going  to hold him to his commitment day by day. If you are consistent, predictable and disciplined in your behavior toward him your child will eventually discipline himself.

Expect a Miracle...

"...stronger confidence level, better concentration and better hand-eye coordination"

"My son Mark is 7 and a very bright, active (OK- Hyper) 2nd grader. Mark had been receiving occupational therapy, vision therapy and auditory training....Mark therapist recommended martial arts training. Mark started Kempo in January. By the school year end his teacher reported a stronger confidence level, better concentration and better hand-eye coordination. He graduated from occupational therapy to Kempo and his learning disabilities don't seem so insurmountable now"

"...thanks for helping me with the first steps to realizing my true potential."

"As you know, I have moved to Boston. I wanted to write to thank everyone for 2 and a half GREAT years of instruction and friendship. I'm glad to see that the school is continuing to expand in membership, so much that maybe someday I'll be able to practice Kempo in Boston. Wishful thinking. Anyway, thanks again for helping me with the first steps to realizing my true potential."
